Ampem Darkoa Ladies denied CAF Champions League place after shootout loss

Ghana will again be missing from the CAF Women’s Champions League. For a third year in a row, the country has no club at the continental finals after Ampem Darkoa Ladies lost the WAFU Zone B qualifier final on Saturday night.

The Ghanaian champions were beaten 4-1 on penalties by Nigeria’s Edo Queens after the match finished 2-2. Beline Nyarko scored twice for Ampem Darkoa, but a late equaliser in stoppage time sent the tie to a shootout.

The game itself started late because of bad weather. When it did get going, Ampem Darkoa struck quickly. In the third minute, Milot Pokuaa set up Nyarko and the Nana Mma were in front. The lead lasted barely a minute. Edo Queens hit back almost immediately and the sides went in level at 1-1.

After the break Ampem Darkoa had more of the ball and created the better chances. In the 71st minute they were awarded a disputed penalty. Nyarko took it well and put her side 2-1 up. They looked set to hold on until the 93rd minute, when Edo Queens scored again, two minutes from the end of added time, to make it 2-2.

From the spot, Edo Queens converted their first three kicks. Ampem Darkoa missed their first two. Nyarko scored the third, but it was not enough. Edo Queens put away their fourth and the contest was over.

That result gives Edo Queens the 2026 WAFU B title and the region’s only place at this year’s CAF Women’s Champions League. It will be their second appearance in the competition; they last played in it in 2024.
