Opoku Agyemang strike gives Kotoko a hard-fought win over Karela

Asante Kotoko returned to winning ways with a narrow 1-0 victory over Karela United at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Thursday, Isaac Opoku Agyemang’s early goal enough to settle a Matchday Five contest the hosts had to defend for long spells.

The Porcupine Warriors needed a response after a 2-0 home defeat to Aduana FC the previous weekend, a result that also brought an end to Eric Tinkler’s time in charge. They got it inside four minutes. Richard Boadu started the move in midfield and found Emmanuel Sanja on the right; the former Vision FC full-back’s low cutback was finished calmly by Opoku Agyemang past Abdul Ganiu. It was a clean, well-worked opener, and it set the tone for an afternoon in which Kotoko were happier protecting what they had than chasing more.

Karela refused to fold. The visitors, who had beaten Hearts of Oak 1-0 on Matchday Four, grew into the game and were the better side for long periods after the break, holding possession and forcing Kotoko back. Abu Adams made an important tackle in the 54th minute to snuff out one attack, and a run of second-half changes helped the hosts keep their shape. Karela made chances, but none of them beat the Kotoko defence. The clean sheet held to the final whistle.

Both sides picked up bookings: Lawrence H. Adabo and Ibrahim Adam for Kotoko, Mohammed Zaidan and Emmanuel Antwi Konadu among those cautioned for Karela — but the game never quite boiled over. Kotoko’s half-time changes, including the withdrawal of the goalscorer and Sanja, were about management rather than adventure.

The three points lift Kotoko to eight from five matches, level with Medeama and Samartex, who have each played one game fewer, and third in the table until the rest of Matchday Five is completed over the weekend. Karela drop to six points from five, their recent momentum checked. For Kotoko, it was less a statement than a necessary reset: one goal, a clean sheet, and a first win of the post-Tinkler stretch.
