2024-09-15 Ghana Premier LeagueLions tame Hearts in Kpando
The Heart of Lions secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Hearts of Oak in their Ghana Premier League encounter at the Kpando Stadium. The game began with both teams displaying cautious approaches, each probing for the opponent's defense vulnerabilities. Hearts of Oak's attacking trio, led by Asamoah Boateng Afriyie, threatened the Lions' goal, but the home team's defence held firm.
In the 25th minute, Lions' midfielder, Ishmael Addo, nearly opened the scoring with a powerful shot from outside the box, but Hearts' goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare, made a spectacular save. There was nothing to show for the half-ending goalless.
Second-Half Summary: Lions started the second half on the brighter side creating numerous opportunities but failing to find the back of the net. In the 57minute of the second half coach Bashir Hayford made three substitutions bringing on Nana Kwame Oppong for Abednego Tetteh, Kwesi Pong for Bismark Anim and Mustapha Yakubu for Michelle Sarpong allowing Lions more control of the game.
The breakthrough came in the 84th minute when Nana Kwame Oppong capitalized on a poor defensive marking from the Hearts of Oak by slotting home a calm finish past Bnejamin Asare after receiving a wonderful pass from Kwesi Pong. Heart of Lions sealed the win and the three points three minutes before regulation time as Ishmael Addo strikes from a precise backflip by former Hearts of Oak striker Kojo Obeng Jnr.
The Phobians are now winless in their opening two games of the season and lie bottom of the league log. The team's coach, Aboubakar Ouattara, is under increasing pressure after the team's poor performance. The Phobians had hoped for a turnaround following their disappointing season opener, but another poor display has further intensified calls for Ouattara’s dismissal.
