Nations FC etched their name into Ghanaian football history on Sunday by lifting the MTN FA Cup for the first time, defeating Dreams FC 5-4 on penalties after an entertaining 1-1 draw at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon.

The triumph marks a landmark moment for the club and secures qualification for next season’s CAF Confederation Cup, offering a significant silver lining to a campaign that ended with relegation from the Ghana Premier League.

The final lived up to its billing as both teams delivered an exciting contest in front of a vibrant crowd. Nations took the lead in the 31st minute through striker Joseph Effah. A long throw into the box sparked a series of aerial challenges that unsettled the Dreams defence, allowing Effah to rise and head home the opener.

Dreams responded with character and equalised through a well-worked team move. Abdul Razak Salifu powered home a header after sharp build-up play and a precise delivery into the area. The goal was Salifu’s sixth of the competition, putting him clear at the top of the FA Cup scoring charts and firmly in the running for the Golden Boot.

Despite creating further chances after the break, neither side could find a winner. The deadlock held through regulation time and the contest was eventually decided by a penalty shootout.

For Dreams FC, the defeat was a bitter disappointment as they missed the chance to win a second FA Cup, having claimed their first in 2023.
