Ghana suffered their first defeat of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after falling 1-0 to Cameroon on Sunday.

A first-half penalty proved decisive as the tournament returnees edged the Black Queens on Matchday 2 in Group D.

Cameroon took the lead through Marie Gisele Ngah Manga, who converted from the spot following a lengthy VAR review. The decision was awarded after Benedicte Simon was judged to have handled the ball. Manga made no mistake, sending goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan the wrong way to open the scoring.

Doris Boaduwaa came closest to an equaliser for Ghana, but her close-range effort was denied by the Cameroonian goalkeeper. Cameroon controlled much of the first half, retaining possession as Ghana struggled to create clear openings. Despite a stronger finish to the period, the Black Queens went into the break trailing 1-0.

After the interval, coach Kim Llars Björkegren introduced Evelyn Badu in a bid to change the momentum. Ghana pressed for an equaliser and went close through Portia Boakye and Badu, but could not find the net. Badu thought she had levelled the score, only for her effort to be ruled out for offside in the build-up.

Late pressure from the Black Queens proved insufficient, and they left the pitch with a narrow defeat. Ghana will now face Mali in their final group match on 6 August, knowing a victory would secure their place in the next round of the competition.
